Boston bombing outage rumors shed light on mobile and Internet ‘kill switch’

Following the Boston Marathon bombings, news began to spread of a US government cellphone network shutdown. While the claims were quickly shown to be false, a secret federal rule does, in fact, make such a shutdown possible. While DHS has in the past denied the existence of SOP 303, EPIC challenged the secrecy of such documents in 2012 by filing a Freedom of Information Act request.

Tech Guru Warns Of Internet “Disaster”

Inventor and scientist Danny Hillis warns that the Internet has “expanded it way beyond its limits,” and is set for a “disaster,” calling for an ‘Internet Plan B’ that would operate in times of emergency. Speaking to Wired’s Michael V. Copeland at the TED 2013 conference, Hillis argues that because so many interconnected systems are now reliant on the world wide web, “We’re setting ourselves up for disaster, like we did with the financial system.”

Google’s New Search Tool to Use CIA and World Bank as Sources for ‘Facts’

Google is making a big change to how it displays results in its dominant search engine. It is rolling out a new feature called the Knowledge Graph which breaks from the traditional practice of matching keywords with webpages.
